EXOYELLOW (2026) explores the collective affect of the so-called “disaster generation” that emerged after the 2022 Itaewon disaster in Seoul. Through interviews with a psychiatrist who researches large-scale disasters and with South Koreans in their 20s and 30s, the artist, Kim, examines the emotions that persist in everyday life after the event and the social conditions that shape them.
Post-it notes left by citizens at the site serve as both a central visual language and research material for the work. Written voluntarily and anonymously, their messages reveal forms of collective mourning there. In conversation with an NGO activist who has documented these messages since 2022, Kim examines various practices of mourning. Drawing on this research, she writes a work of fiction and translates its narrative and affect into moving image, ceramics, and performance.
Combining hand-drawn stop-motion animation and ceramic works, EXOYELLOW makes visible the affect shared by a generation through traces of mourning left on the Post-it notes. It documents feelings that persist in everyday life after disaster but remain invisible, and considers how life can be sustained amid recurring disasters through different forms of mourning.
